CARBON MONOXIDE ALARMS

You can’t see, smell or taste it. A CO alarm can.

Every home with a gas appliance should have a carbon monoxide alarm. We supply and fit one for £65 inc VAT on any visit – or £168 inc VAT as a visit on its own.

WHY CO IS A PROBLEM

The silent killer

Carbon monoxide is a poisonous gas made when fuel doesn’t burn properly. A faulty or badly fitted boiler, cooker, gas fire or blocked flue can fill a room with it – and because it has no colour, smell or taste, you won’t know it’s there.

It stops your blood carrying oxygen. Small amounts over time make you ill. Large amounts can kill in minutes.

Symptoms to watch for
HeadachesDizzinessFeeling sickBreathlessnessTiredness and confusionCollapse or loss of consciousness

They’re easy to mistake for flu or tiredness. Warning signs: you feel better when you leave the house, several people at home feel ill at the same time, or your pets are behaving oddly.

Signs an appliance may be faulty
Yellow or orange flamesA gas flame should be crisp and blue. A lazy yellow or orange flame is a warning sign.
Black or sooty marksStaining on or around a boiler, fire or cooker.
Pilot light keeps going outOr the boiler keeps cutting out for no clear reason.
More condensation than usualHeavy condensation on windows in the room with the appliance.
Seen any of these? Stop using the appliance and message us to get it checked.
WHY EVERY HOME NEEDS ONE

Your second line of defence

An annual service is the first line of defence – it stops carbon monoxide being made in the first place. A CO alarm is the second: if something does go wrong, it warns you before it’s too late. Every home with a gas boiler, fire or cooker needs both.

HomeownersStrongly recommended in any home with a gas appliance. It’s cheap protection for your family.
LandlordsIn England, you must fit a CO alarm in any room with a fixed fuel-burning appliance such as a boiler or gas fire. Gas safety checks →
Where to fit itIn each room with a gas appliance, and ideally near bedrooms too. We position it to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Look after itTest it monthly with the button. Replace it before the expiry date printed on the alarm – most last 7 to 10 years.
