If you smell gas
DO
Open windows and doors to help ventilate the gas.
Turn off the gas supply at the meter, as well as any gas appliances.
Call the National Gas Emergency number on 0800 111 999.
DON’T
Smoke or use any naked flames.
Touch any electrical switches – turning a switch on or off could ignite a gas leak.
Enter a cellar, even if your gas meter is in the cellar.
Safety advice from the gas network (SGN), which runs the emergency service for our area. Suspect carbon monoxide? Call the same number and get into fresh air.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT
Once it’s safe, we’ll get you back on
1
The emergency engineer makes it safe
The gas network’s engineer will attend and make the situation safe. This may mean turning off your gas supply or an appliance.
2
A Gas Safe engineer repairs the fault
Before the gas can be used again, a Gas Safe registered engineer needs to find and fix the problem. That’s where we come in.
3
We test, reconnect and check
We repair the leak, test the installation and safely get your heating, hot water and cooking back up and running.
